Après avoir transcrit poétiquement l’influence de la lune sur sa musique dans son premier album ‘Mare Undarum’, Sélène Saint-Aimé transmute son héritage culturel caribéen dans ce second enregistrement.
Le POTOMITAN, pilier central des temples vaudou haïtiens désigne aussi, dans les Antilles, la mère sur laquelle repose l’équilibre de la famille.
L’idée de ce titre était comme une évidence pour Sélène après de longs mois passés en Martinique, en famille et notamment avec ses grands-parents… Elle se remémore de longues conversations avec sa grand-mère paternelle sur l’histoire de leur famille, la vie, les souvenirs d’enfance et la force des femmes antillaises.
Sans répétitions et (presque) sans partitions, la séance d’enregistrement se déroule de manière très organique, Sélène dictes les mélodies au groupe depuis le piano présent dans la pièce, les rythmes sont chantés puis reproduits aux tambours.
Loin d’une relecture figée ou d’une fusion pan-caribéenne, POTOMITAN, enregistré en prises live, s’abreuve à la source musicale et spirituelle qui irrigue la culture afro-descendante, l’invention d’un nouveau folklore vivifié par l’improvisation.

On her debut album, ‘Mare Undarum’, Sélène Saint-Aimé poetically transcribed the influence of the moon on her music, here, on this second recording, she transmutes her Caribbean cultural heritage.
In Antillean lands, the POTOMITAN, central pillar of Haitian voodoo temples, also designates the mother who supports the equilibrium of the family.
This title stood out as an obvious choice for Sélène, after many months spent in Martinique during the pandemic.
Long conversations with her paternal grandmother retracing the history of their family, life, childhood memories and the strength of Caribbean women all 'infused' the writing and the recording of this album.
Without any rehearsal and (almost) without a score, the recording session played out organically, with Sélène dictating her melodies to the band on a piano which was in the room, she clapped the rhythms that were later reproduced on the drums for this special recording where the collective sound was captured live.
POTOMITAN, drinks from the spiritual and musical source irrigating afro-descendant culture, and invents a new folklore, vivified by improvisation.
